The Back-to-School Shopping Order of Operations | Kangaroo Kids

Every August, the same thing happens. The supply list comes home, panic sets in, and somehow you end up at checkout with a full cart, a lighter wallet, and three pairs of pants your kid will refuse to wear by October.

There's a better way, and it mostly comes down to order. Do the steps in the right sequence and you spend less, buy smarter, and skip the last-minute scramble entirely. Here's the one we swear by.

Measure before you buy anything

Kids grow in secret. The size that fit in May is often a full number off by August, and feet are the worst offenders, they can jump a size over a single summer of barefoot backyard chaos. Before you shop for a single thing, measure them, height, waist, and shoe size, so you're working from real numbers instead of last year's guess.

It takes five minutes and saves you the return trip when the "right size" turns out to be wrong. Write it down, keep it in your phone, and pull it up every time you're standing in front of a rack wondering if the 6 or the 6X is the safer bet. You'll use it more than you think.

Step 2: Shop your own closet first

Before you buy anything new, take inventory of what's already there. Pull it all out, try the questionable pieces on the actual kid, and sort into three piles: still fits, outgrown, and never-worn. It's a little tedious and completely worth it, because you can't fill gaps you haven't found yet.

The "still fits" pile is almost always bigger than you expect, which means you're not replacing a whole wardrobe, you're filling in around one. And the "outgrown" pile? That's not clutter taking up drawer space. That's store credit waiting to happen, which brings us to the fun part.

Step 3: Turn the outgrown pile into next year's budget

Those outgrown clothes are worth something, and letting them sit in a bag in the garage is leaving money on the table. Bring the gently loved pieces in to sell, and you walk out with cash or store credit to put right back toward the new-year wardrobe.

Here's why so many families go the store credit route: it stretches further than cash, it never expires, and it works both in-store and online. That means last year's too-small jeans quietly become this year's fresh ones, no new money required. It's the closest thing to a free back-to-school haul there is, and it's sitting in your kid's closet right now.

Step 4: Fill the gaps, don't rebuild the wardrobe

Now you know their sizes, you know exactly what still fits, and you might have a little credit burning a hole in your pocket. This is the step where you actually shop, and because you did the first three, you're filling specific gaps instead of standing in a store guessing and grabbing.

A few new tops. The jeans that finally fit right. The shoes, because it's always the shoes. Buying gently loved means you get quality brands for a fraction of what they cost new, so your budget goes further and you can spend it on the pieces that actually matter. Come see us for this part, we're stocked with back-to-school clothes and shoes, and since there's usually just one of each, the early shoppers get the best of it.

One last thing

Don't feel like you have to finish the whole list all at once. It's tempting to knock it out in a single triumphant trip, but kids change their minds, grow another half-size out of nowhere, or fall head over heels for something in September that wasn't on anyone's radar in August. Leave a little budget and a little patience for the pieces that come up later.

Getting ahead of back-to-school was never about finishing it in one go. It's about starting early, buying smart, and walking into the new year feeling ready instead of frazzled. Take it one step at a time, and you'll get there with your sanity and your wallet intact.

You've got this. And when you're ready to fill those gaps, we're here, in-store and online, with the good stuff waiting. 💛
